In my last blog I spoke about sorbitol and the effects it had on the body and why it was so bad for us, so I thought I would do a quick post on aspartamine another common sweetener found in food and drinks that people consume everyday.
Is aspartamine really as bad as it seems?
I read a lot of claims about aspartamine gives you brain tumours, it causes cancer, multiple sclerosis, migraines and headaches. However when I looked at the research these claims are unproven and lack scientific eveidence! Now i’m not saying that means we can start consuming lots of aspartamine and have no health problems as it can still be toxic to the body. Why? When aspartamine is exposed to heat or prolonged storage it breaks down into metabolites and one of the metabolites it breaks down into is Diketopiperazine (DKP). This metabolite is a toxic metabolite thats isn’t usually found in our diets and the effects it has the body are still unknown. I don’t know about you but I wouldn’t want something toxic coursing through my body if I didn’t know what effect it would have on me! Further research is definitely required so in my personal opinion I would still avoid it.
The BIG question everyone wants to know though is can aspartamine help weight loss? there are claims that say sweeteners are better for dieters than sugar, however with aspartamine this is UNTRUE! Studies published in the Journal of diabetes care by DR R. Johnson and Dr R. Lustig found that “aspartamine raises insulin levels as much as sugar”. High insulin levels turn us into fat storers rather than fat burners, so put down the diet coke because it isn’t going to help you lose weight!
