As many as 75% of the population are lactose intolerant, with the rest of us struggling to digest milk based products without even knowing it. The body stops producing the enzyme lactase between the ages of 2 and 5 (enzyme needed to properly metabolize lactose) therefore the body is not designed to digest milk on a regular basis.
Not only are we not designed to digest milk the benefits that the government has brainwashed us with for years e.g. milk will give you strong teeth and bones, has been found to be untrue in several scientific studies. In fact consuming dairy regularly has been shown to increase the risk of bone fractures by 50%. Dairy has also been linked to an increased risk of cancer particularly prostate cancer, heart disease, digestive problems, IBS and allergies. Yikes!
So, where am I going to get my calcium from and what am I going to use instead of milk. Well, dark green leafy veg are full of calcium as well as other vital vitamins and minerals. And for a milk substitute I use oat milk. If you’ve read my previous blogs ‘the power of oats’ you’ll see oats are a superfood which are high in fibre, slowly release energy and contain phytochemicals which fight cancer and heart related diseases. I gave up dairy 2 years ago and have never looked back. Not only is my IBS under control without the use of medication, my hair and nails grow really quickly, my skin is clearer and Ive only had one bad cold since. There are so many options available to make cutting out dairy easy.
